Hello!
So I just finished the first book on my list!
And now to figure out a way to review it without giving away spoilers...
First thing you need to know about me is that if I really like a book, I will read it multiple times. So if I don't do that, it says a lot.
I don't plan on reading this one again.
Don't get me wrong, I did like it, but it's just not my usual genre and I didn't love is as much as I wished I did.
First of all, I didn't like the way it was written. A lot of short sentences (I hope that wasn't because of the uncorrected version I have) that made it almost too simple. Maybe that's because I'm used to reading in English, and reading Dutch is now too 'easy', but I don't think so.
Second, it's a thriller (kind of anyway) and that means that once you know the plot, it ruins the book for any future reading you might want to do. The thrill is gone if you know what's gonna happen and who did it.
Third, for a thriller, it wasn't very 'thrilling'. 80 pages before the end, I knew for sure who had done it, I just lacked a few whys. Maybe that was the point of the author, I don't know.
I did, however, like the little chapters in between the real ones, that showed you what happens in the book she's writing. I liked that story within the story, that resembles the real one so much, just not completely. It tells you more about the backstory of the characters, without saying it explicitly.
And I liked the way she portrayed the murderer. It wasn't just a one dimensional character, and at one point, I almost felt sorry for them.
There were also a few little plot twists that I didn't see coming, and it was nice to be surprised. At one point I even reached the stage where you just need to read until it's over. And that's exactly what I did :)
So my overall rating for this one: 3.5/5
Have you read 'The trap'? What did you think of it? And if you haven't read it, does this make you wanna read it? Tell me in the comments below!
Next up: The book thief by Markus Zusak.
